Episode Twenty one - The Champions (1983)

We know, we are late once again but we have come back with an episode jam packed with movies for your listening pleasure. Plus, you might notice we have created chapters for this episode so you will have an easier time navigating through the hour and a half conversation.

To start off, we cover a few movies such as Drew Hancock's Companion (2025), Steven SoderberghThe Presence (2024) and the J-Horror phenomenon around the characters featured in Sadako and Kayako (2016). Then, we move to a quick conversation around Marvel's Captain America - Brave New World before recommending two books, Film Korea by Michael Leader and Jake Cunningham (published in english by Wellbeck Publishing and in french by Ynnis Edition) and Wrath of the Dragon - Real life fights of Bruce Lee by John Little (published in english by ECW Press). Finally, we move to our main conversation of the episode around Brandy Yuen's The Champions featuring a young Yuen Biao, Moon Lee and Dick Wei. This early contender to the title of martial art soccer comedy leads us to talk about various other things including Captain Tsubasa, the more obscure Moreo Top Striker (aka L'ecole des champions in France), and Bernard Tapi's duet with the rapper Doc Gyneco.

Episode Twenty - The One (2001)

We aimed to record and release this new episode before the end of the new year but instead we are kicking off 2025 with our episode about James Wong's The One, featuring Jet Li. The movie about travelling through different dimensions before travelling through dimensions was cool! Take that Michelle Yeoh and Marvel movies! But, as its now customary, you will also hear us talk about loosely related movies we watched too, like its the 1963 american comedy Its a mad mad mad mad world featuring Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney or Ethel Merman and some of the most impressive real stunts imagineable at the time, and a forgotten gem, Broken path (also known as Attack of the yakuza), an action film from 2008 featuring Johnny Yong Bosch (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and tons of voice acting).

Episode Nineteen - Future Cops (1993)

Its our last episode of the new year and we didn't do as many as last, so we sincerily hope you will excuse us but with a change of location for one of your podcaster and a change of employment for the other, there was no time to truly do everything we wanted. This also means, as you can expect from the date of publication, the episode we tease herein will have to wait. Fear no more thought, as we have recorded another great one where we discuss the merits of Future cops.

A film long only known to the most hardcore of hong kong cinema purist as one of the worst one ever made has made its way to Blu-ray thanks to Eureka. This, very loose, adaptation of the classic Capcom fighting game that changed everything for gamers worldwide, Street Fighter 2, demonstrates Wong Jing's imagination to surf on every possible trend even if the end results doesn't really do the original material justice.

Unfortunately, this episode was recorded under difficult circumstances so the sound isn't the best we ever had. It does mean a few words were cut off from time to time so, for clarification, the four heavenly kings of canto-pop, as explained by Wing, are Aaron Kwok, Jacky Cheung, Leon Lai and Andy Lau. As for the director of the first two Fight back to School, that's none other than Gordon Chan.

Episode Eighteen - Halloween Special: Baby Assassins, Bride of Chucky (1998), Encounter of a Spooky Kind (1985) and Mr Vampire (1980)

That's it, its the end! The final showdown between two formers friends! They will be blood, tears and maybe some guts... Or maybe not. For this new episode we have chosen to cover not one, but two fims at the same time... but they aren't part of a series. For Halloween, we thought we'd cover two of our favourite, and two classics, 1980's Encounter of the spooky kind, directed, written and with Sammo Hung, and 1985's Mr Vampire, directed by Ricky Lau and starring Lam Ching-Ying.

However, as an intro, we bring you a conversation around the japanese franchise of teenage action movies, Baby Assassins, starring Akari Takaishi and Saori Izawa, and... Bride of Chucky (?!) directed by none other than Hong Kong's own Ronny Yu.

Episode Seventee - In the line of duty 3 (1988)

We started this podcast with the In the line of duty movies (Yes, Madam and then Royal warrior) so it only made sense to finally cover the third in the series. This third entry is simply called In the line of duty 3 as the series had been sold to the US market as In the line of duty 1 (Royal Warrior) and Yes, Madam (In the line of duty 2). The numbering would be later changed to fit more with the order in which they were produced and released in Hong Kong, but this one is the third installment and features some returning faces, but a brand new lead, Cynthia Khan, alongside a japanese actor, Hiroshi Fujioka. Together, they will be fighting a couple of thieves motivated by love and communism. This was a brand new start for the series as it was Cynthia Khan's first Hong Kong feature and as you can imagine, we had lots to say about it.

In the line of duty 3 released on Blu-ray by Eureka Entertainment.
