Episode Eighteen - Halloween Special: Baby Assassins, Bride of Chucky (1998), Encounter of a Spooky Kind (1985) and Mr Vampire (1980)

That's it, its the end! The final showdown between two formers friends! They will be blood, tears and maybe some guts... Or maybe not. For this new episode we have chosen to cover not one, but two fims at the same time... but they aren't part of a series. For Halloween, we thought we'd cover two of our favourite, and two classics, 1980's Encounter of the spooky kind, directed, written and with Sammo Hung, and 1985's Mr Vampire, directed by Ricky Lau and starring Lam Ching-Ying.

However, as an intro, we bring you a conversation around the japanese franchise of teenage action movies, Baby Assassins, starring Akari Takaishi and Saori Izawa, and... Bride of Chucky (?!) directed by none other than Hong Kong's own Ronny Yu.

Episode Seventee - In the line of duty 3 (1988)

We started this podcast with the In the line of duty movies (Yes, Madam and then Royal warrior) so it only made sense to finally cover the third in the series. This third entry is simply called In the line of duty 3 as the series had been sold to the US market as In the line of duty 1 (Royal Warrior) and Yes, Madam (In the line of duty 2). The numbering would be later changed to fit more with the order in which they were produced and released in Hong Kong, but this one is the third installment and features some returning faces, but a brand new lead, Cynthia Khan, alongside a japanese actor, Hiroshi Fujioka. Together, they will be fighting a couple of thieves motivated by love and communism. This was a brand new start for the series as it was Cynthia Khan's first Hong Kong feature and as you can imagine, we had lots to say about it.

Episode Sixteen - Hommage to Cheng Pei-pei, Corey Yuen and Long Arm of the Law 1 (1984)

We had decided to cover only Long arm of the Law for this episode last month but unfortunate news caught up with us and forced us to add a longer introduction to this episode.

After a short conversation around AI and its impact on how we watch movies, we then move to talking about Cheng Pei-pei, an incredible actress who gave so much to Hong Kong cinema and sadly passed away on 17th July 2024. We then move to a filmmaker we hold close to our heart as we covered several of his movies in previous episodes (Yes, madam in episode 1 and Righting wrongs in episode 8) and who appeared in several others movies we spoke about (Eastern condors in episode 3, Iceman cometh in episode 14). Corey Yuen. A true legend of Hong Kong cinema whose name should be more well known.

Finally, our movie of choice for this episode is none other than the recently reissued Long Arm of the Law. A 1984 crime movie directed by Johnny Mak, whose career was very limited, and written by the ex cop Philip Chan. Long arm of the law might have ended up being a cult classic for many as its notoriety is limited to fans of Hong Kong cinema but its a noteworthy release for its mix of action and gritty realism around a cast of loveable but flawed misfits desperate to make a life of their own in Hong Kong.

Episode Fifteen - The Seventh Curse (1986)

Its's a new first in the history of this podcast, because this time we are covering a recommendation from one of our listener, so don't hesitate to do the same because, as you can see, we listen! Plus, it just happened that neither of us had seen this movie, so we had the pleasure of discovering another movie featuring Wong-jin's talent as a scriptwriter to adapt two of famous novelist, script writer and talk show host, Ni Kuang's creation, Dr Yuen (played here by Siu Ho-chin from Mr Vampire) and Wisely (played by Chow-yun fat). The two heroes, or mostly Dr Yuen to be honest, embark on an adventure influenced by the same pulp stories that gave birth to Indiana Jones, featuring a few monsters and some gore. A truly exciting movie with subtle nods to various production for an original results fans of adventure stories, pulp and just all out Hong Kong cinema creativity will enjoy.

Episode fourteen - The Iceman Cometh (1989)

We are back to talking about one movie, but there is a catch! This time, we are talking about one half of this podcast's experience in acting and training on how to handle weapons! For the first half of the episode, Wing tells all about what kind of training he recently went through to master various weapons on stage and what does it mean to fight an opponent when you are fighting in front of a camera or an audience. We then move to our movie of choice, namely another classic featuring Yuen Biao, The Iceman Cometh. Directed in 1989 by Clarence Fok, it features also Maggie Cheung (Police Story, In the mood for love..) and Yuen Wah (Kung Fu Hustle, Eastern Condors...) and tells a complex revenge story with a lot of humour, fighting and gruesome murders. The kind of amazing cocktail we adore.

As you will hear at the beginning of the episode, this one does come with a trigger warning as it features a characters whose main trait, outside of laughing like a maniac, is to murder and rape. However, the movie does not feature any explicit rape scene, neither does it have any rape joke.
