Episode Twelve - Monkey man (2024) and Taxi Hunter (1993)

Its another double feature! Dev Patel's directorial debut just came out and we could not stop ourselves from talking about its hong kong influences as well as what the movie brings to a table crowded with John Wick wannabes. Spoiler alert, we don't think its a John Wick type movie, but come find out what else we have to say about it. Then, we follow it with a look into Taxi Hunter, a 1993 "category 3" movie directed by Herman Yau and featuring the legendary Anthony Wong. Its a movie with a lot of charm but also a good occasion to look into Category 3 movies, what they are, and the movie's lineage in the vigilante genre alongside Martin Scorcese's Taxi Driver released in 1976 and Joel Schumacher's Falling down, also released in 1993!

Episode Eleven - Dragon Ball & Magic Crystal (1986)

Hey, your favourite podcast is back but this time our "intro" counts for so much of the actual episode we decided it would be a double bill since we could not mention how much Akira Toriyama, the genius and legendary mangaka who passed away earlier this month, influenced us. So, to start of the episode, we talk for an hour about what Dragon Ball, Dr Slump, Dragon Quest and his influences did to us, and we hope you'll forgive this disruption to our usual conversation about Hong Kong cinema as it felt important to us to remember such an important part of our childhood.

Following our tribute, we are talking about the movie Magic Crystal, an action/scifi/comedy by none other than Wong Jing (God of Gamblers) featuring Andy Lau, Cynthia Rothrock and many more. This adventure takes from many sources as you will hear but end up an interesting ride and a good excuse to talk about this director's output and a more commercial side of Hong Kong cinema . As always, thank you for listening and let us know via our various pages what you thought of the episode.

This episode features in the background the song Pour le plaisir by Herbert Leonard and the theme from Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer by Andy Lau. We also want to point you to the amazing performance by Andy Lau, surrounded by a group of Ultraman, performing the cantonese theme song for City Hunter.

We hope you enjoy!

Episode Ten - Prison on Fire (1987)

We are back, and with a gift! On our tenth episode, we are not only covering Ringo Lam's 1987 classic prison drama, Prison on fire, but we are also offering you to win a copy of L'Incendiaire, a deep dive into Ringo Lam's career, by french journalist Sebastian Lecoq. The caveat? Its in french, so only a few of our listeners will be interested, so... sorry about that? But, if you want this book for yourself or for someone else, keep listening until the end of the episode (or skip, that's also possible, I guess) .

Now, back to Prison on Fire. A harrowing movie featuring our idol, the one and only, Chow Yun-fat and the nonetheless excellent Tony Ka Fei Lung. This classic might not be as well known internationally as its predecessor, City on Fire, but its an unforgettable piece of cinema history and a prime example of Ringo Lam's talent as a director. We hope you enjoy.

Episode Nine - From Beijing with Love (1994)

We are back! And what better way to start the new year with a solid comedy from the 1990s? This is the first time we are talking about Stephen Chow, mostly known outside of Hong Kong for Shaolin soccer and Kung-fu Hustly, but Wing chosed From Beijing with Love and Mathieu was quite happy to discover this hommage and parody of James Bond movie drenched with more subtle nods to Wong Kai Wai and a classic figure of Chinese literature.

We also start this episode with an half hour discussing the merits of the Mortal kombat series in relation to martial arts and why Mortal Kombat 11's story mode is "a better time travel story than Avengers Endgame".

We hope you enjoy this first episode for 2024, let us know what you think by sending us messages on our Instagram or on bluesky, and tell your friends, family, pets, and colleagues about us.

Episode Eight .five - Silent night (2023)

Surprise! We might have said we were taking a break until January... or at least that's what we told each other... but, the new John Woo movie came out in the theater in the Netherlands, Mat watched it and he had to tell Wing and you all about it. Its... well, it certainly is a movie, so I won't spoil anything but we hope you will enjoy us talking about it.

This episode is shorter, or was supposed to be shorter, but we ended up talking about Mortal Kombat 11 at the end. That's what you get with a Christmas special, a whole lot of fun and nonsense.

So, enjoy this episode 8.5 and see you in January for a return to our regular programming with more classic Hong Kong productions.
